The character designs are outlandish, and the colors are so vibrant as to close in on retina-burning, as special attacks explode and fill the screen. Moving on a 2D plane, the 3D characters use a cel-shading technique rather like that in Sega's Jet Set Radio, although it obviously looks a fair bit less polished.

Slap Happy Rhythm Busters (yep, that's what it's called) may not have the depth of a Virtua Fighter or Soul Calibur, but as you can see from the movie below, it has a visual personality all its own. It looks like they've decided to go back to the drawing board, and thrown a couple of buckets of bright neon paint at it. was as by the numbers as they come, and Shao Lin's four-player mode stripped the graphics down to the bare bones, which made it hard to consider that an asset. Perhaps a lack of graphical polish was part of that, but another significant problem was that they didn't seem to offer anything very original. Like I say, neither of them did too well. JThough Polygon Magic is probably best known for their horror adventure Galerians, they produced a couple of fighting games before that, the comparatively forgotten Vs. This is one whacked out game that is definitely worth checking out.

If you wanna check out what we're talking about, then you should download the Quicktime movies of the game that we've posted in the media section below. And if you happen to finish off your opponent, you're treated with a whacked out little finishing move.

Hitting the beats correctly will cause more damage to the opponent. The screen will zoom in on the characters, and the player that's doing the move will have to time the button presses on the controller to coincide with the bars that are moving to the center of the screen, in a style very similar to Konami's timing-based Bemani games. After the bar is filled, the player simply has to press the L1 button to set off this move, and assuming the opponent doesn't block, this will set off a very cool little special attack.

The only really unique feature about the game's play mechanics is that it has a Beatmania-style super special move that can be when the player's special bar is completely filled. While the combo system is by know means deep, since all of the specials and supers can be performed quite easily, the game manages to be a blast to play, as it's so easy to get in to and do some crazy stuff.

For more flare, each of the characters can perform super moves when their bars fill up at least one level (max of about three) by usually doing something simple like a quarter turn plus the R1 or R2 buttons. Other moves can be done with double taps plus a button, reverse quarter circles, and so on - nothing really special or original on this end. The cool thing here is that there's usually a completely different move for doing the move with the strong or weak punch. Most moves and combinations can be performed by doing simple Street Fighter-esque movements - with most characters having different special moves that are accomplished by simply doing the quarter turn plus the two different punch buttons.

This definitely seems to be aimed at a younger crowd, however, that's not really a knock on the game because it does manage to provide a very simple guilty pleasure.

The base play mechanics in the game are quite simple and if you're looking for a really deep fighting game, you're not going to get it here. The cartoon-style character and background art are flamboyantly colored and have some whacked out designs that just fit the style of the game perfectly. The graphics that this game possess won't make anyone think Street Fighter III in terms of character animation and technical excellence in the 2D realm, but in the area of vibrant colors and visual flair, it more than stands on its own. Slap Happy Rhythm Busters completely lives up to our unusual expectations and has proven to be one of the most enjoyable games that we've had the pleasure of playing in the past few weeks.įirst of all, the graphics while not technically impressive, are quite stunning. With all the self-hype that we were giving to the game, it seemed like we would be ripe for a serious letdown when the final Japanese product arrived in our offices just a few days ago, however, that wasn't to be the case. Given our love for Konami's Bemani games, quirky Japanese titles, visually pleasing 2D games and the game's off the wall title (most kick ass name for a game since Shinjuku Happy Jumpers), we just knew that we simply had to cover this game - despite the fact that it has a snowball's chance in hell of being brought over to the United States.
